what inspired or motivated you to change ur mind towards civil services nd leaving such a lucrative job.

I started my prep with quite enthusiasm but when i explored this area my confidence in it weakend down...
1.Civil servants are paid such meagre salary ... I am not able to think how can one give a gud life style to his family.
2.At the slightest whims of politicians u r transferred to such remote places where life seems pathetic.

Frankly speaking sir...i am not much of a philanthropist....i just see it as a career....power nd prestige attracts me but serving people was nt smthin dt made me go for it....

Civils was always in my mind during graduation and even before that so there was no sudden change of mind for me.

When you talk about the salaries of Civil Servant I would agree that they are less compared to their corporate counterparts but again the reason why people become “civil servants” are not monetary incentives. Having said that I would also like to say that the amount of money and other incentives a civil servant gets these days is enough for a decent middle class living.

As for the “transfers to remote places” part is concerned, there is no doubt that the job of a civil servant is tough but that’s where the challenge lies.

For me the motivation was giving service to the nation. Sitting in a corporate giant and working 14 hours for X amount of money would have given me far less satisfaction than working 14 hours for my nations in a fraction of salary.

So these issues and motivations are very subjective and personal and it is very essential to have a long term view of your life goals before choosing any career 

I am a student at synergy and was a part of discussion we had with you today morning. I am a graduate student of IIT Delhi with civil as my discipline. I passed out this year in 2011 and dint join the job with an aim to clear in 2012. I need your guidance in my preparation. I would be thankful if you can help me.

I haven't given the pre this year and I have started my preparation from the scratch from this June. Presently, I am taking only 1 coaching i.e. Pub Add and is thinking to take second optional as Pali which I'll prepare after pre next year. Please give your views on this.

I caught some of your strategies today which u told in class about making synopsis and all but the main problem I am facing in Pub Add is how to relate it too the present administration.Truly speaking, I am very very weak at GS and current affairs and I am not sure if I will be able to make it till next year though I have started following newspaper and its somewhat improving.

The things which you told about GS and current affairs, should I focus on them from October when I start my GS coaching at Vajiram because presently I feel that Pub Add is keeping me too busy and I am not exactly able to get if I am moving on the right track.

Please help me out because I have left my job for this and have no other option and even can't take a second chance because I feel that this one and a half year should be enough.

-Selection of correct optional is the most crucial part of success in civil services, what I can tell you is that my selection of optional were based on my relative comfort with that subject, the amount of guidance available and the amount of effort required. I had chemistry as my optional in first attempt and but I realized that the amount of effort required in chemistry for a very good score was too much. Hence I switched to sociology.

-It’s a slow process and there is nothing which cannot be achieved with sincere and honest effort. Once you start getting things you will develop more interest and start doing very well. It’s a virtuous cycle.

The things which you told about GS and current affairs, should I focus on them from October when I start my GS coaching at Vajiram because presently I feel that Pub Add is keeping me too busy and I am not exactly able to get if I am moving on the right track.

-Try to atleast follow the newspapers till then.

-Life doesn’t end with an exam. I am sure you will get in the civil services with a very good rank but there is more to life than civil services:)..Looking at your background I can say you are a very talented person so be happy n keep studying :)

- good that your mechanical is done but again I would not advice you to lose touch and best would be to keep writing some tests in mechanical engineering.

- good but i think general studies needs continuous effort! So updating is of key importance.

-I stressed even in that interaction in Synergy that the purpose of reading any material is to get conceptual clarity. If you get concepts out of notes then well n good, otherwise "refer" a relevant book for that particular concept.

- write some 20 markets from past year papers and show it to Sir and then try to work on the feedback.

( not in actual writing)
I am able to understand news and hve a good discussion on the issues but the same problem of not making synopsis...of news
-if you dont have time for making synopsis then dont worry, but you have to ensure retentivity!
